IMS values giving back to the community. In our everyday work, we strive to maintain the highest of standards in our service and products to serve healthcare professionals. We also directly support the community where possible.
After a series of devastating tornadoes struck Alabama on April 27, 2011, IMS and its employees gave thousands of dollars and many volunteer hours to the relief effort. Employees in Birmingham and Homewood gathered bottled water, food, diapers, cleaning supplies, and other necessities for donation to the Birmingham Salvation Army.
Many gave time and money outside of work, and IMS employees from throughout the country gave $2,445 to the American Red Cross' Alabama tornado relief fund, generating a $1,222.50 matching grant from IMS. IMS provided financial support for relief efforts in Tuscaloosa through the DCH Health System Foundation. IMS employees also cooked a hot dog and hamburger lunch for 100 volunteers at Birmingham's Christian Service Mission, which served as a warehouse and clearinghouse for a wide range of storm-related volunteer initiatives. The Greater Birmingham Area Command of the Salvation Army has named IMS the first winner of the Brigadier Luther Smith Distinguished Service Award, a new tribute unveiled for 2010. Early this year, 35 IMS employees and family members spent a Saturday cleaning and painting a Salvation Army social service center near downtown Birmingham. The mobile kitchens the agency uses to deliver meals for disaster victims also got a scrubbing during the employee service day. Salvation Army Area Commander Major Todd Smith said he particularly appreciated the IMS employees' willingness to work directly with the community, as opposed to simply writing a check. "IMS is not only a company that addresses the needs of hospital surgical staff all over the country, but they value and prioritize giving back to their own community," he said. "Thank you for helping us help others." (06/17/2010)
Cotonou, Benin - Sept. 30, 2009
In his first week onboard the floating hospital the Africa Mercy, IMS Red Technician Willie Miles (aka "Miles") serviced, modified, or inspected 4,700 instruments. Yes, 4,700. "Not a bad week," Miles quipped in an e-mail to friends and colleagues back home, Not bad, indeed. Some 7,000 surgeries are performed each year on the Mercy Ships vessel, dedicated to providing health care where it is not otherwise available. IMS sent Miles there in support of Instruments of Mercy, a charity that has stepped up to care for the ship's inventory of surgical instruments.
