IMS Technician Kevin Aaron recently returned from two weeks repairing surgical instruments onboard the Africa Mercy, flagship for the non-profit organization Mercy Ships®. By the time he returned to work as a team leader in IMS' Birmingham repair lab, Kevin had cleaned, adjusted, and provided repairs as needed for 66 of the ship's surgical trays - a total of 1,472 instruments. Kevin, the second IMS technician to repair instruments on the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship, endured extreme heat and equipment failure on the ship - but he also had exhilarating experiences. "One little girl had been born without a nose, and after the surgery she walked around telling people, 'I'm pretty, I'm pretty.' It was really something to see," he recalled. "She felt better about herself." Kevin's trip was sponsored by IMS in support of the non-profit organization Instruments of Mercy, which ensures that the surgical instruments used by medical mission teams are in proper working condition.
