IMS Supports International Mission Program

November 19, 2004 - (Birmingham, AL) - Reaching across borders to serve those in need is the central purpose of a newly founded non-profit organization, Instruments of Mercy.

Talented and selfless physicians donate their time around the world to perform various medical procedures to the underserved. To assist in this mission, Instruments of Mercy was created.

One recent mission trip was made to Los Alcarrizos, Dominican Republic in October. Esperanzo Hospital is a 30-bed facility that has a waiting list of needy patients that lasts months, sometimes years. A team of physicians led by Dr. Dennis Madrid from Albuquerque, New Mexico and Dr. David Mehne from Puerto Rico, performed a variety of necessary procedures including hip replacements and eye procedures.

Bonnie Ross, a sales representative with IMS in the Albuquerque area, contacted her company headquarters and inquired about the possibility of IMS becoming involved. Facilities provided the equipment, IMS performed the necessary repairs and the equipment was then donated to the medical mission team for use in the Dominican Republic. Ross accompanied the mission team on this week-long trip.

"It is gratifying to participate in such an extraordinary program and to maximize the surgeons' performance in these procedures. Countries that are equipment challenged are now able to serve their citizens with the help of American physicians and instruments. We're honored to support this program," said IMS President and CEO, Gene Robinson.
